·Perhaps the most famous maze in history has been the Creten Labyrinth from Greek mythology. This was where the mythical monster the Minotaur dwelled, waiting for its hopelessly lost victims.

·Lifesize mazes have attracted people throughout time, starting some four-thousand years ago. A maze can be defined as an intricate network of winding paths with perhaps some 'blind alleys'. There are many types of mazes, they can be formed with interlocking wooden/mirrored walls or they can be formed using floor tiles like in the Chartres cathedral found in France. There have been mazes grown from a variety of crops. The hedge maze is a more permanent solution which takes a number of years to develop and requires constant upkeep. There have been mazes constucted using turf as well as sunflower. In the case of sunflower mazes, bees have become an issue with patrons. Perhaps the most well suited crop for building mazes in the North American climate is maize.

·Maize is the crop of choice for North American maze operators for a number of reasons:

1. Corn grows well in our climate and is easily accessable.
2. Corn mazes have lower maintenance when compared with hedge mazes.

3. Corn maze designs can be different each season providing the customer with a new challenging maze each year.
4. The cost of building a corn maze is much lower.
5. The use of the wide array of 'corny' puns is reason enough for some producers.

·Cornfield mazes provide a form of entertainment unlike any other. People marvel at the complexity of the designs as well as the sheer size of a professionally developed corn maze. Cornfield mazes provide a place for families to explore, and are great for local school and team outings. Provided with a map, kids are given a lesson in orienteering, and couples will get lost. A walkable maze is fun and exciting for all ages, young and old. Some maze operators have equipped their mazes with 'lookout' towers for the employees to help people on their way. Some even have bridges that climb over the top of the corn stalks connecting to adjacent paths allowing the customers a different route as well as some perspective of their location. Many producers have chosen to use Halloween to host special 'haunted' maze dates.

·Most mazes take about forty-five minutes to an hour for the average person to discover the exit. In the maze above, some customers spent up to two hours searching through the maze as the result of clever planning by the operators.

·Cornfield mazes are perfect for those who enjoy a challenge, as well as those who love the peaceful quiet of the outdoors.
